Skyrim-pressions

You know, I said I was gonna look at Discworld next, and I shall get to it soon, I promise! I loaded it back up, and found my save was gone, so I have to play the whole damned thing again. Its no bother though, because its all kinds of funny!

In the mean time, I thought I would chime in with my thoughts on Skyrim so far. Obviously, there shall be spoilers, so click on at your peril...

Welcome!

Welcome stranger!

Let me start by saying that I'm one of this worlds procrastinators. Why do today what you could do tomorrow? I'm also a sucker for a deal, particularly cheap ass games. The Steam sales, odd games on PSN, used games, freakin' ebay, it never ends. I find myself spending a pound here, a pound there, and pretty soon there's a mammoth pile of virgin games, never installed, never played. Its an affliction, and one that I have received a lot of stick for from my better half.

Some time VERY early this year, I hopped onto a little website called backloggery.com (check it out, its great) which allows one to keep track of all the games you haven't finished. You can chart your progress, add new games, even roll a random game to work on. It was a revelation! I can organize this nightmare backlog into a manageable bloody system!

After a couple of days, I had a quick check to see how many games I actually had on my list, as I'd not really been paying too much attention. It was 111. Holy crud. When was I gonna finish this pile of games? Its TOO big. When was I gonna fit this stack of games in among all the other regular releases during the year, your Skyrims, your Assassins Creeds, etc. Then it hit me.

If I spent an average of three days on each game, that would last me the year. I would be playing the games I had actually bought, and not wasting my money like usual. Why not try to see if I could manage without buying any games this year?

Now I'm not stupid, I know I'm never gonna be able to resist buying a new game for the entire year. I mean, there's a new Resident Evil out in November (super awesome), and there's no way I'm missing that. So here are... THE RULES.

Rule 1: Either finish the game, or play a minimum of five hours.
I'm not gonna stick with a game that sucks, no matter how cheap I am. I shall endeavor to see the ending footage for every game I play, no punking out and getting distracted in the final levels. The five hour minimum is completely arbitrary, and is mainly in place to stop me immediately dropping a game if the opening is naff.

Rule 2: Renting is totally fine.
I use Lovefilm, and as a money-saving gaming tool it's damned near indispensable. For the price of a years subscription, you could buy 3-4 brand new games. I get to play nearly ten times that amount with Lovefilm! This will also help to sate my thirst for the newer releases.

Rule 3: The Humble Indie Bundle is also totally fine.
For those who are not aware, once every few months the amazing guys over at www.humblebundle.com put together a charity games bundle. The games are from a lot of indie developers, and have included titles such as Super Meat Boy, VVVVVV, Cave Story+, World Of Goo, the list goes on. The proceeds are split between the devs and two fine charities, which is detailed over on their site. All I can say is you absolutely NEED to be buying these bundles, great games for a great cause, and a large portion of my backlog is thanks to these guys :D

Rule 4: Last until 2013.
Really, I have no idea if i can manage this last one, but I'm going to damn well try!

I shall endeavor to abide by these rules for the whole year. You can also track my list of games below (which is still not finished) over at Backloggery. When I'm nearing completion of something, I will gladly take suggestions on what to play next!

Enjoy your stay, and keep posted for my first update: Cave Story+
